Russell Lee papers, 1903-[ongoing] (bulk 1936-1965).

Photographic prints, personal memorabilia, and publications. The bulk of the photographs are prints from Lee's years with the Farm Security Administration (FSA), from 1936 to 1952. Other photographs include those taken while Lee was serving with the Air Transport Command (ATC) from 1942 through 1945, documentary work undertaken for the Coal Mines Administration in 1946, and portraits of Texas authors J. Frank Dobie, Hart Stilwell, and Fred Gipson. Also included are photographs of Lee from childhood through adulthood along with awards, camera equipment, and personal memorabilia.

Russell Lee was born in Ottawa, Illinois on 21 July 1903. His childhood, although of comfortable middle-class rural American heritage, was marred by tragedy. His parents were divorced in 1908, when Lee was five, and his mother was killed in an accident in 1913.
